The cardboard smothers existing weeds and grass while decomposing into organic matter. The compost feeds plants from the start. The mulch retains moisture and continues breaking down to feed the soil below.
Annual Top-Dressing
In established no-till beds, the annual routine is simple: add 1β2 inches of compost to the surface each spring and fall. That's it. No digging, no turning, no disruption. The soil ecosystem does the rest, pulling nutrients downward and building fertility season after season.

Is No-Till Right for Every Garden?
No-till works in virtually every garden context β raised beds, in-ground plots, container gardens, and even lawn conversion projects. The only situation where it requires adaptation is in heavily compacted or waterlogged soils, where initial aeration may be needed before transitioning to no-till management.
